چکیده

In the current work we thread the problems of smoothness in non-commutative C∗algebras arising form the Baaj-Julg picture of the KK-theory. We introduce the notion of smoothness based on the pre-C∗-subalgebras of C∗-algebras endowed with the structure of an operator algebra. We prove that the notion of smoothness introduced in the paper may then be used for simplification of calculations in classical KK-theory. The dissertation consists of two main parts, discussed in chapters 1 and 2 respectively. In the Chapter 1 we first give a brief overview to Baaj-Julg picture of KK-theory and its relation to the classical KK-theory, as well as an approach to smoothness in Banach algebras, introduced by Cuntz and Quillen. The rest of the chapter is devoted to operator spaces, operator algebras and operator modules. We introduce the notion of stuffed modules, that will be used for the construction of smooth modules, and study their properties. This part also contains an original research, devoted to characterization of operator algebras with a completely bounded anti-isomorphism (an analogue of involution). In Chapter 2 we introduce the notion of smooth system over a not necessarily commutative C∗-algebra and establish the relation of this definition of smoothness to the BaajJulg picture of KK-theory. For that we define the notion of fréchetization as a way of construction of a smooth system form a given unbounded KK-cycle. For a given smooth system A on a C∗-algebra A we define the set Ψ μ (A , B), n ∈ N ∪ {∞} of the unbounded (A, B)-KK-cycles that are n smooth with respect to the smooth system A on A and fréchetization μ. Then we subsequently prove two main results of the dissertation. The first one shows that for a certain class of fréchetizations it holds that for any set of C∗-algebras Λ there exists a smooth system A on A such that there is a natural surjective map Ψ μ (A , B) → KK(A, B) for all B ∈ Λ. The other main result is a generalization of the theorem by Bram Mesland on the product of unbounded KK-cycles. We also present the prospects for the further development of the theory.

, Duality and D - Branes in Bivariant K - Theory

We describe a categorical framework for the classification of D-branes on noncommutative spaces using techniques from bivariant K-theory of C∗-algebras. We present a new description of bivariant K-theory in terms of noncommutative correspondences which is nicely adapted to the study of T-duality in open string theory. We systematically use the diagram calculus for bivariant K-theory as detailed...

Unbounded Bivariant K-theory and Correspondences in Noncommutative Geometry

By adapting the algebraic notion of universal connection to the setting of unbounded KK-cycles, we show that the Kasparov product of such cycles can be defined directly, by an algebraic formula. In order to achieve this it is necessary to develop a framework of smooth algebras and a notion of differentiable C∗-module. The theory of operator spaces provides the required tools. Finally, the above...

D-branes and Bivariant K-theory

We review various aspects of the topological classification of D-brane charges in K-theory, focusing on techniques from geometric K-homology and Kasparov’s KK-theory. The latter formulation enables an elaborate description of D-brane charge on large classes of noncommutative spaces, and a refined characterization of open string T-duality in terms of correspondences and KK-equivalence. The examp...

D–Branes, RR–Fields and Duality on Noncommutative Manifolds

We develop some of the ingredients needed for string theory on noncommutative spacetimes, proposing an axiomatic formulation of T-duality as well as establishing a very general formula for D-brane charges. This formula is closely related to a noncommutative Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem that is proved here. Our approach relies on a very general form of Poincaré duality, which is studied her...

Bivariant K-theory via Correspondences

We use correspondences to define a purely topological equivariant bivariant K-theory for spaces with a proper groupoid action. Our notion of correspondence differs slightly from that of Connes and Skandalis. We replace smooth K-oriented maps by a class of K-oriented normal maps, which are maps together with a certain factorisation. Our construction does not use any special features of equivaria...
